Wie is A Certain Miss Brown?
De Bruijn is niet bepaald een spannende achternaam. Brown trouwens ook niet. Maar als je in een verhaal iemand zou tegenkomen die ‘een zekere Miss Brown’ heet, krijgt die naam ineens heel ander karakter. Een ‘zekere Miss Brown’ impliceert een vraag, nieuwsgierigheid – wie is dit eigenlijk? – en kan daarom allerlei mogelijke verhalen met zich meebrengen. Dit is precies wat Anne de Bruijn zo fascinerend vindt aan taal: wat woorden en de daaruit opgebouwde verhalen kunnen doen. Waarom een Engelse naam? Omdat ze schrijft, communiceert en doceert in beide talen.
Anne de Bruijn maakte audioproducties voor onder andere het Van Gogh Museum, het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, het Groninger Museum, en schreef mee aan onder andere Don’t Buy This Book en diens opvolger If You Don’t met Donald Roos. Buiten de culturele sector maakt Anne ‘commercieel’ werk voor bedrijven met maatschappelijk oogmerk zoals Astare Uitzendbureau. Ook geeft zij workshops en trainingen. Haar boek Er is niemand zoals jij verscheen in juni 2025.

What's in a name?
De Bruijn, which roughly translates as ‘Brown’ is not a very exciting surname in itself. However, if you were to encounter someone called ‘a certain Miss Brown’ in a story, that name suddenly sounds full of possibility: she could be anyone and have any type of backstory. This is exactly what Anne de Bruijn likes about language: the possibility of stories and what they can do. That’s why she chose this name for her business – because it’s about stories, the words shaping them, and the effects that they have.
Anne de Bruijn has written and produced audioguides for clients such as the Stedelijk Museum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Groninger Museum. She also creates ‘commercial’ work for organisations witha social purpose, like Astare Uitzendbureau, gives workshops and teaches English. Anne previously co-wrote Don’t Buy This Book and its successor If You Don’t with Donald Roos, and her new book (in Dutch this time) Er is niemand zoals jij appeared in June 2025.
